Hermana Shaw

The gospel changes lives!

Hey everyone!

Happy Valentine´s Day! This past week flew by soooo fast. Hermana Shaw was sick this Wednesday and was up throwing up all night. I felt so bad for her. We think it was because she ate habichuelas con dulce - it´s a sweet that they make out of beans during the week of Easter. I am sure if you google it it will pop up. Thank goodness nothing happened to me (Because I am ACTUALLY Dominican now). So we stayed home that day and I just studied my scriptures all day.

So, I was feeling very inadequate this past week just because I had almost lost the phone and had miscommunicated with some members. I knew that Heavenly Father wasn´t telling me all those bad things about myself, but I was feeling down so I read a whole bunch of advice that my family had sent me the week before. I was thinking about something that my mom had told me, a subject my dad had told me about, and my studies had been focused around something Cydnee had sent me. My mom had told me that she was going to try and focus on the Spirit so that she could do Heavenly Father´s will and not hers. Then my sister told me how she wanted to be a better person and as long as you are doing your best, Heavenly Father will help you. Then my dad told me about how we should love all of those around us and how valuable that is. So I wanna share this scripture that kind of sums it all up. It is in Moroni 10:32-33. It says,

¨32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.
33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.¨

This whole process that Moroni is describing is a sanctification and purification that can occur in all of us. President Brigham Young taught, ¨Retrench in everything that is bad and worthless and improve in everything that is good and beautiful.¨To retrench is to remove something." I love that! That goes exactly with ¨deny yourselves of all ungodliness ¨. If we do that and love God with our everything, THEN is His grace sufficient for us. We become holy beings. We come to love others and become better people. I cannot even describe how much I am grateful for my Savior, Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Every day I realize that I have weaknesses and I have a desire to change them and I know I can with His help. I have learned that on my mission. We can be changed into better people as we fully come to realize that we have weaknesses. We can´t be down on ourselves. All we have to do is adapt and become more like our Savior Jesus Christ.

Omar is doing great and has been coming to church ever since his baptism. He even brought his 9 year old sister with him this Sunday. He is reading the Book of Mormon every day and is now in JACOB! Wow. I am so impressed haha. Every day he surprises me by his strong testimony of the gospel!

Even though we didn´t do very much this week we had a great experience with a recent convert, AltaGracia. She has such a strong desire to not only read the Book of Mormon, but to study it. Everytime I am at her house, I feel the spirit so strong. Her situation is ROUGH. She lives in a house surrounded by water that is contaminated and so her children are always sick, but she thanks God for her situation every day. She told me that the Gospel has changed not only her life, but the life of her family as well. She said that there is so much more unity and respect in her family. She knows that her Father in Heaven has a plan for her. Now she is being blessed with 2 jobs to support her family. I am just so grateful for the members here and their testimonies.

That was pretty much my week and hope you all have wonderful weeks this week!! I attached pictures of part of my district this Sunday (Elder Galleguillos, Elder Najera -Mexico, Hermana Shaw, and I) silly selfies, us in the rain, and us on our Pday today at the ¨beach¨
