I have been in Hawaii for over 10 months but this week I felt I experienced it on a whole new level. We live right up against a mountain, so it's to be expected to have bugs..... however, I had no idea some of these creatures existed. I kid you not, I saw cockroaches as big as fun sized snickers bars. One night a centipede crawled across my companion's forehead as she slept. She woke me up at 1:30am and told me she was scared because she couldn't find it any more. I was half asleep and I told her "lets just find it when it's light outside." Very inconsiderate of me, I know. She said " UMMM NO" and forced me out of bed and 30 minutes later I found myself hitting the creature of Satan with a slipper. I flushed it down the toilet and went back to bed. I know God created all creatures for a reason, but I've yet to discover why centipedes exist.
Other than that, this week was good. We are having a really hard time finding people to teach here in Kailua. Kailua is a more well off city and people are pretty comfortable with their lifestyles now. After much prayer and fasting, Sister Downs and I decided the best thing to do with our time was tract. Tracting is going from door to door. Not the most fun... but we have been singing to them with an ukulele so more people are willing to listen to us. Although we have yet to find a new investigator, I know the Lord will bless us and help us. We are going to tract until we find someone to teach or our knuckles are raw to the bone. Whichever comes first.
On a more spiritual note, I want to share a scripture this week that I read in the Book of Mormon. Mosiah 7:33 reads
"But if ye will turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, and put your trust in him, and serve him with all diligence of mind, if ye do this, he will, according to his own will and pleasure, deliver you out of bondage."
I witnessed that promise this morning. We went on a hike with some elders and as we were coming back we got completely lost. We had no idea where we were. All we knew is we were by a river. Hawaiian jungles aren't very merciful and neither are it's mosquitoes. We all said a prayer and eventually found the trail again. I know Heavenly Father listens and answers prayers. He is willing to help us find the path again both literally and metaphorically. His path for us is always the easiest path.
Man, I know I say this every week, but I just love you guys! I'm overwhelmed with the constant love & support you give me. I'm grateful that although I've been gone for a while, you haven't forgotten about me :')
I hope you all have a great and safe Memorial Day. I am grateful to live in a country where men and women sacrifice their lives so we can be free. If you see someone serving in the military today, please thank them.
