Lauren's Institute for Education

Sister Caroline McKendrick

First Week!!

Hello everyone! I finished my first week! I’m loving it so far and I love being able to interact with the kids and staff at Lauren’s Institute. I can tell everyday just how much the staff love the kids and I’m beginning to feel that same type of love for them. I thought I understood what it meant to say that special needs children have a special spirit. But I didn’t realize how much that was true until I began to spend every day this last week with them. Rarely do I see them without a smile on their face and I’m already learning so much from that. It’s taught me to look at everything in my life and to be grateful for what I have and find the happiness in everything. Because there really is so much that our Heavenly Father has given us and there really is so much that I have to be grateful for :)

There’s this really sweet girl named Cheyenne who is in a wheelchair and always reaches for me to push her as soon as she gets off the bus in the morning. She’s so cute haha. And if I’m not pushing her she just grabs my hand and makes me walk right beside her. She doesn’t talk she just laughs which never fails to make me smile. I don’t know what I did to get her to like me so much but I absolutely love her!! ❤️ So the kids that I work with are in Kindergarten but their ages range from about 6 or 7-10 years old. This boy, named Jack, who is probably 8 or 9 has a problem with taking his clothes off so we have to always keep an eye on him. But on Friday (make sure you’re not eating when you read this next part 😅 ) we were at recess and we had looked away for a second and he had taken most of his clothes off and his diaper and then proceeded to wipe his DIRTY diaper all over himself and the jungle gym. It was a MESS and so NASTY! He’s lucky he’s cute haha.

I wish I had some pictures of some of the kids to show all of you! I’ll try to get them for the next email. I’ve already learned a few things just serving this first week. A lot of things are hard and difficult with this mission. But what mission isn’t, right? I know that these difficult things will only allow me to grow in to be a better person and Daughter of God. I’m able to feel Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love for me everyday. I know that if you find some time to serve others you’ll be able to feel that same love too. “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” - Mosiah 2:17.

I love you all,

Sister Wearne
