Welch, West Virginia

Elder Moore

1st Week in the Field

Hey everyone!
This week was awesome! I said goodbye to everyone at the MTC. It was so much fun and I learned so much more in 4 weeks then I did my whole life. We had to be at the airport at 3:30 am. I slept like the whole plane ride haha. We get to our layover in Atlanta and everyone was hungry and I took them straight to
Chick-Fil-A haha. I've never been more happy! It was crazy because there were thousands of people and like nobody knew who we were. And now it's the real deal and we aren't surrounded by hundreds of missionaries haha. My teacher gave us a challenge to talk to 2 people, and not gonna lie I was scared! I sat next to this one lady and talked to her about the church and her religious background. She seemed super interested, but she had to go because of her flight! That boosted my self confidence a ton! Then I tried talking to other people and nobody was interested. That put my self confidence back to reality. We finally got on our plane to WV and it is the smallest plane I have ever been on. I love plane rides except for this one haha. We were going through grey clouds and turbulence the whole time. I was a little scurd. We finally get to WV and this is the smallest air port I've been to and it looked like we were gonna run into trees and all of a sudden we landed. If you don't stop in time, there is a cliff at the end of the runway. Its wild! Anyway we get off and get our luggage and we find our mission president, Elder and Sister Newman. They are the sweetest people on earth! I talked to them on the ride back to the house. They are from Florida and love to fish. I love Florida and I love to fish as well! He showed me some of the fish he caught and I was like I just made a new friend haha. We stay overnight at the mission home and got our new companions in the morning. My new comp is Elder Moore from Syracuse Utah. He is awesome and loves card games and board games. He has a full shelf of them. I've never played 90% of the games but he's determined to teach me haha. He helped me create a dungeons and dragons character. Never thought I'd play this game in my life but it finally happening haha. I can tell we are going to get along well. Our area is called Welch. He said it’s one of the poorest in the mission. Welch used to be called “Mini New York” because there was 16,000 and growing then all the coal mines and everything shut down. Everyone left and now the is 1,6000 people in Welch and they can't leave because they don't have the money. It's like a ghost town. He took me on a tour and
we talked to some people and even though they are so poor and some are on drugs, they are so friendly! I am going to love it here because I love the people we've met already. There are 2 girls on date for baptism! Even though their backgrounds are sketchy, it so cool to see how the gospel has changed their lives and they have come closer to Christ. We have a branch with about 25 people on a good day they say. I already have a talk next week haha. Our little house is really old but nicer than most. It's like 2 trailers combined. It already feels like home. We have a bear head in our living room wearing a WV baseball helmet haha. Most of the houses in Welch are drooping and falling apart. It is so sad to see. They are just happy they have a place to stay. I'll send some pictures! I'd love it if you'd email back and catch me up on things. I don't have service at my house so I only see things when I'm at the church.
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas!
Love you all!
Peace out
-Elder Boyer
Ps there is an old creepy abandoned Walmart in Welch and I think it is the only one to ever shut down completely because of employee theft.
