Elder Zortman,

I have been thinking about you a lot lately. Everything seems to remind me of you. Someone's laugh, a smile, a song, even a primary child. You are always on my mind but this week seemed to be more emotional. I am so proud of your decision and your perseverance through your trials. I am trying so hard to pay it forward with the missionaries in our ward. I hope you are getting the same care and more. This week we have started Alma. We are in the part where Alma goes to the city of Ammoniha and they were mean and rude to him. Then an angel asked him to go back to the town again and he quickly obeyed. He found Amulek (a member of the church) and Amulek took him into his home and fed and cared for him. Then Amulek was called to go out and help Alma with his missionary work. In this story you are Alma. You are depending on the members of the ward to be like Amulek. I know that you cannot avoid hard situations. People will be mean and rude to you just like they were to Alma. But I hope you can look to your Father in Heaven just as Alma did. He was comforted by being obedient to his calling. Many things have pointed that this is what I should write about in your letter today. Sunday was filled with people testifying of how they have overcome tribulation. Poor Sister Carter just lost her husband and had the courage to stand and testify of the love of our Father in heaven. In my primary class we learned about Shadraq, Meshac and Abed nego. They were commanded to pray to the idol the King created every time they heard trumpets. If they did not they would be thrown into the fiery furnace. They chose to be obedient and refused to pray to the idol. They said the Lord would protect them with his power and even if he would not protect them they still would not pray to the idol. They were indeed thrown into the fire and they were protected by an angel. I read Charlie's Monument with Jessenia on Sunday. I won't say much because I know that Jessenia wanted to write you about her feeling for the book. But, it was about a man who endured much hardship, more than most of us will be asked to bear. He had a great capacity for love and forgiveness.
Here is the poem at the beginning of Charlie's Monument. It sums up what I feel you need today:

Before He sent His children to earth
Gave each of them
A very carefully selected package
Of problems.

He promised, smiling,
Are yours alone. No one
Else may have the blessings
These problems will bring you.

And only you
Have the special talents and abilities
That will be needed
To make these problems
Your servants.

Now go down to your birth
And to your forgetfulness. Know that
I love you beyond measure.
These problems that I give you
Are a symbol of that love.

The monument you make of your life
With the help of your problems
Will be a symbol of your
Love for me,
Your Father

I know that leaving your family was one of the hardest thing you have ever been asked to do. I know that this is one of the carefully selected problems you have been called to bear. I also know that our Father in Heaven will not give us anything we cannot handle. Though it may seem tough he is right there beside you as my thoughts and prayers are also. Always!! Be strong my son. All of this will be for your good. You are one special man and God has plans for your. Be diligent so he can make of you what you are destined to become. All of my love Mom.

Elder Zortman,
It seems like a good companion is just what you needed. We did get snow so sad. I am not ready for the snow and ice. Feel sorry for William he has to take his driving test in that nasty weather. We have just finished your birthday box! I hope you like it! We will send it so it arrives before your birthday. Now is the time to send Christmas ideas. Anything that you want? It is so good to see your smile. Was that the Jordan river temple that you had a picture by? Where was your companion?
Love you so much
