Hard Work, Perseverance and Hard Work!
(You said hard work twice!)
Oh my goodness! This week has been supper hot!!! It's been awesome! However the humidity drains your energy, I love it, but it drains you. We had zone conference this week which was awesome! I love President Ames he is so great! And of course his wife! Two of our investigators were in the hospital this week, one of which is still in.
Okay, so let's start with the Zone conference. The theme was pretty much planning. Effective weekly, daily and personal planning. I came away from that with a stronger resolve to plan for my investigators to meet their needs and to make sure that we were visiting as many people as we possibly could throughout the time we had which is really hard by the way haha. It was kind of annoying because Elder Price and I don't quite see planning with the same value. But either way, our lesson always turn out great! That is, when the people we are teaching aren't in the hospital haha. We got the cleanest zone award (for clean cars) which y'all might have seen on Facebook and we had some pretty darn good lasagna there too!
It's starting to get really hot which isn't too bad as long as we have a lot of water and down here in Texas, even if they don't want to hear our message, people will give you water without you even talking to them haha so it's pretty great!👌 Now, when you're fasting, that is torture. I don't suggest fasting in the Texas heat unless it is really something that is important. I almost stopped separating which would have been really bad. Really bad but I continued to sweat 😝.
One of the difficult thing of getting iPads is now we need to balance the use of iPads and the use of our paper copy scriptures. Nevertheless, I did find a way! use my physical set for teaching, except for videos, and my iPad for studying. I finally found a really effective way to mark my scriptures. In my ipad I color code it according to the Preach My Gospel lesson colors and insert it into a tag corresponding to the principle within that lesson so that way, I can keep track of which scriptures I have marked for what and I can see them when I pull up that lesson tab. In my physical copy I color code it the same way and just write the principle off to the side in the margins. Now for the verses that don't necessarily fit in with a lesson, I just mark with red or another color that doesn't represent a lesson. It's way simple but it just took me forever to organize it. This way I can always have he same scriptures marked on both sets! Oh it's so beautiful!
The mission life is pretty chill though, I mean, for the most part everyday is completely different but exactly the same haha. We do the same things but get different results. We always have something to laugh about though!
We did some service this week. We were expecting to be moving furniture so I wore shorts. We ended up breaking up a tree so it could be taken away. At one point I looked down at my legs and saw that there were a ton of mosquitos flying around my legs. I never felt any bites so I didn't think too much about it... Man did I underestimate Texas Mosquitos! As you can tell from my pictures I have around fifty mosquito bites on my legs. It is the most annoying thing in the entire world haha but hey, come what may and love it right?!
This has been an amazing week and more will come! Now it's time for a spiritual moment...
So with this upcoming Saturday being the Fourth of July I thought it fitting to talk about those brave men and women fighting for the freedoms of our nation and many others around the world. I have always been a war and history buff, I have always loved the events of gallantry and bravery that come from the situations surrounding combat. I think about that picture, I'm not sure how many have seen it, but it shows service men and women fighting in a lake of the blood of their brothers and sisters in arms while holding up the country. It reminds me of the Star Spangled Banner it depicts the fort during the battle in New Orleans in the War or 1812. The American flag stayed standing all night despite long hours of bombardment and rocketing. The flag stayed standing all night long because brave men would rather die holding up the flag than to see their flag fall down and letting their fellow country men feel defeat. In the movie Saving Private Ryan" With Tom Hanks, Vin Diesel, Matt Damon and a few others, it takes place in June of 1944. To be exact, June 6th; D-day. A woman had four sons fighting in World War ll three of which were killed the last one alive being a private in the 101st Airborne division of the U.S. Army. A small group of American soldiers were sent on a near suicide mission behind enemy lines to find him, and bring him home safely at all costs. Tom Hanks is the officer in charge of this small band of soldiers sent to find private Ryan. Throughout the course of this mission several of the men die. They eventually find private Ryan. When they do they decide to hold a bridge and help out the outfit that private Ryan is with. Throughout the firefight that ensued all but a few of those soldiers die including the officer in charge. Right before he dies, he says to private Ryan, "Earn this." It was at that moment I needed to reevaluate my life. I thought of all the men and women that have died in the service our country. Defending my grandparents, parents, myself and ensuring that we will be safe for as long as possible. I thought, am I really living up to that? Would they look at me and think "I am glad that I gave my life so that he can do that."? The last verse of the Star Spangled Banner goes as follows:
Oh, thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust!”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And so it is with our lives. When we were baptized, we made a sacred promise with God that we will "mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death." (See Mosiah 18:9) We need to remain worthy of something even greater, a sacrifice that is so infinite that no mortal can comprehend with our finite minds. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Because He died all men will live. Because he suffered all men can be made whole again. I know this to be true. I know that this is the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
