Believing in Christ

Greetings! From Susquehanna!

This last week has been a blast! We were able to find a few more investigators this week, and get a few more investigators to church - super stoked. Not sure if i told everyone this last week but we have an investigator on date for the 25th of this month (Gus Yeske). It was originally for July 2nd but he wanted to move it up, really excited for that! We also had three investigators there at Church, Diana and Tony (plus their kids), as well as Gus. It went great, all three are progressing and we couldn't be happier!

This week was transfers. I’ll be staying but Elder Parkinson will be leaving:( But my new companion is super cool. His name is Elder Dyer. He actually plays lacrosse also, so I am super stoked for that – can’t wait to see what this next transfer has in store for us!

Elder Parkinson and I had a really awesome experience this week. We had not had a lot of luck been tracking; however, we knocked on one door and a woman answered. We told her who we were and in the background her boyfriend yelled at us saying that there was nothing us "Jesus People" could tell him that he didn't already know about Jesus. So I yelled back and said, "I bet there is" laughing. They let us in and we sat and began to talk about the Restoration. I could see his demeanor completely change. The Spirit was definitely evident in the room as we began to share experiences with them they did the same with us. I could see a light in their eyes. As we ended the lesson we found out that they both work for a member in our ward, so we called the member later and asked if we could all have dinner this Saturday at their house along with our two new investigators (Kasey and Rich). They agreed and this Saturday we will be having dinner at the Valdez home, wow! As we (everyone) open our hearts to the Lord, He can do miraculous things!

So for my spiritual thought this week I want to talk a little bit about a book I am currently reading. It is called Believing in Christ. It is a wonderful book, I encourage all of you to read it if you have time. The basic premise of the book is: Are we each believing in Christ or believing Christ. Yes we can all believe that Jesus is the Christ and that he is the Son of God, but when Christ promises us blessings, as we follow Him and His teachings, Do we really believe it? Do we truly believe what we have read, studied, pondered, and prayed about?

A great story from the book:

I was sitting in a chair reading. My daughter, Sarah, who was seven years old at the time, came in and said, “Dad, can I have a bike? I’m the only kid on the block who doesn’t have one.” Well, I didn’t have the money then for a bike, so I stalled her. I said, “Sure, Sarah.” She said, “How? When?” I said, “You save all your pennies, and soon you’ll have enough for a bike.” And she went away.
A couple of weeks later, I was sitting in the same chair when I heard a “clink, clink” in Sarah’s bedroom. I asked, “Sarah, what are you doing?” She came to me with a little jar, a slit cut in the lid, and a bunch of pennies in the bottom. She said, “You promised me that if I saved all my pennies, pretty soon I’d have enough for a bike. And, Daddy, I’ve saved every single one of them.” My heart melted. My daughter was doing everything in her power to follow my instructions. I hadn’t actually lied to her. If she saved all of her pennies, she would eventually have enough for a bike, but by then she would want a car. I said, “Let’s go look at bikes.”
We went to every store in town. Finally we found it—the perfect bicycle. She was thrilled. Then she saw the price tag, and her face fell. She started to cry. “Oh, Dad, I’ll never have enough for a bicycle!” So I said, “Sarah, how much do you have?” She answered, “Sixty-one cents.” “I’ll tell you what. You give me everything you’ve got and a hug and a kiss, and the bike is yours.” Then I drove home very slowly because she insisted on riding the bike home.
Like Sarah we go through this life saving our pennies, we know that we can never give the full amount of perfection or the price of the bike without the help of our Lord. He makes up the difference if we let him, and if we fully access the power of the atonement. Now do we believe that? Do we believe everything he promises to us? I hope that each of us can ponder that question throughout this next week. It is my testimony that as we not only believe in Jesus Christ but believe Him, Heavenly Father's blessings will be within reach. In the name of Jesus Christ Amen.
Hope your week is great!
