My companion wants to wait until Thanksgiving to set up for Christmas...nah. We don't need to wait. Christmas in the mission is definitely not like Christmas at home, but it's not because of a lack of trying. Last year we made pancakes with buttermilk syrup, we filled stockings with candy, and we exchanged presents. We didn't have an eight-foot tree, but it was a lot of fun anyway. This last week we had two baptisms--they were Hector and Tiziano, ten and twelve years old. Their family all came to accompany them for this moment, and it was very nice. At one point, due to a scarcity of piano players, I was playing prelude music. I messed up a good number of times, but I guess that's what happens when you don't get much practice. Now that they ́re members, they ́re at a critical moment--having recently decided to join the church, they must develop and prepare for the slew of problems that life will fling at them. The gospel of Jesus Christ can be a huge help, but it can only do that if we do our part. Even coming to church on Sundays is only a part of the equation. If we don't try to become followers of Jesus Christ in word and in deed, seven days a week, emulating His example of love and service, we are figuratively sitting on the edge of the dancefloor, humming along and watching the dance unfold. The more you give, the more you get out of it. One of our friends, a woman named Susana, came to church for the first time in a very long time this week. I think that the most inspiring thing that I saw the whole week was one of the members bringing her to sit with her family. Being in a new environment, church might have been intimidating for Susana, but she had a friend--someone to guide her through. As a young man, I always made it a priority to seek out those who seemed to be on the outside looking in. I knew what loneliness felt like, and I didn't want others to have to go through it. I invite you to look for such an outsider and invite them inward. To continue the image from the last paragraph, find someone sitting down and bring them into the dance. Shame nobody, and be one. After all, that is what Jesus Christ asks of us.Merry Christmas! Sing a carol for me!Elder Sheffer
