What a week it has been! We had our interviews with President and Sister Mendenhall this week, which of course was amazing! I seriously love them so much! They are amazing! The cool thing was that right after Elder Layton and I had our interviews with them, we had Emiley meet us at the church and we taught her about the temple and Eternal Families with Pres. and Sis. Mendenhall. The lesson was AWESOME!!! I think it may have been the best lesson we had yet. Emiley was in tears, but the good kind of tears. When we taught her Saturday, she said she had cried for an hour after our lesson, but that it was a good thing. She is making amazing progress!
We also had Zone Meeting this past week which was also great. I had seen President briefly last week and I let him read something I wrote. It is my personal commitment statement. I definitely felt guided by the Spirit as I wrote it, and I’m really proud of how it turned out. President liked it as well and asked me to train the missionaries in the Boulder Zone on how to write one themselves, so I included that in part of my training. I also talked again about the difference between activity and achievement. I shared the story from the Batman movie: The Dark Night Rises, where batman is in the cave/prison trying to get out. For any of you who don't know the story, there are steps along the side of the wall leading to the top. Halfway up a harness is set so that if you miss one particularly big jump, you don't fall all the way down. In the end, Batman realizes that the harness was his crutch. He fell back on it, knowing if he didn't make the jump he would be alright. I wrote on the board #CutTheCrutch. We all have different crutches - things we fall back on because we feel like it is too difficult or whatever it may be. We listed some of the different crutches we all have, and then we all committed to get rid of them and to trust in our ability, along with the Savior beside us, to make that jump and then to give EVERYTHING we can to make it. It was a cool training and I think we all got a lot out of it.
This past week we had the Cultural Celebration, in conjunction with the dedication of the Fort Collins Temple, the next day. Both were AMAZING experiences! It was my first time watching a Cultural Celebration. The Spirit was strong as we learned about some of the history and the sacrifices of people! The songs that they chose were great. The actual Temple Dedication was yesterday, and it was great! President Uchtdorf presided and he was the one who offered the dedicatory prayer, which was just beautiful.
Lastly, I want to end with a note given to Elder Layton and me from Emiley. For those who read this who have not served a mission, or even those who have, this is what missionary work is all about…
"Thank you so much for all that you have done, for helping me find my way and for helping me learn how to feel the love of Christ as well as how to love Christ. I will forever be grateful for the time and effort you put into supporting me and helping me grow. With your guidance, I have been able to find in my heart the truth of the Church, the gospel, and in turn the truth in myself. So thank you."
