I Got A New Best Friend And Cut My Head
Well this week had been another week. Yes I know that makes no sense. I still find it fun. We had almost all of our lessons this week fall through. Which was rather depressing. But we were able to reschedule all of them and have a few lessons with new people this week that we are hoping go well!
We have been going to a community Bible study the past two weeks with a family that is investigating. Their kids are in Scouts at church and their daughter goes to Girls Camp every year and goes to Young Women's and is even going to EFY this summer. They are just hung up on a few things. The daughter will likely be baptized as soon as she is 18, but we don’t know for sure. The family is a wonderful family and so full of love. At the bible study, we have been able to meet a few different people. We currently have a man who is Muslim that we are going to teach this week (he was one of the lessons that fell through last week). One of the men in the bible study mentioned that he used to believe Islam but converted to Christianity. I explained to the man that we were teaching and asked him for any advice. We started talking and got his number down to meet up with him. Turns out he had read some of the Book of Mormon and had some questions. I am sure that in his eyes he does not see how The Book of Mormon could be scripture, but he is very nice and I am not worried about him trying to Bible bash with us, so I am looking forward to meeting with him later this week.
Something else I am looking forward to this week, is that we got our curfew extended to go play basketball at the church. There is a group of about 10-15 non-members that play, and so we are going to go and hopefully build a relationship with a few of them. Looking forward to that.
On the surface, this past week really didn’t seem too exciting, but I am getting better at recognizing the spirit in the little things, which is cool. There have been several times that my companion started to leave a doorstep and I said, wait because I knew we had to wait a bit longer, and within 30 seconds someone answered. On Saturday I felt suddenly that we needed to go visit a member who was in a care center, even though we were planning on doing that on Sunday. We immediately went over there and who should we see in the Lobby, but the mother of our recent convert Ben. We were able to chat with her for awhile and actually set up a time for us to watch “Meet the Mormons” with her and her son. She is never home when we go to teach Ben. The really exciting thing is that the night that we set up to watch the movie, I will be on exchanges with our Zone Leaders, who would actually be the missionaries that would teach her. So it is awesome that they will get to meet her this next week!
Oh, a fun update . . . I cut my head. I was whoopin up on these 16 year old kids playing basketball. They had the hoop low and I forgot, so I jumped into the rim and got a nice gash. Don’t worry, it only bled for a few minutes. And once it stopped bleeding, we kept playing and won. So it was all good.
I continue to see the Lord’s hand in my life and all around. I had a really neat experience that I don't think I have shared. If I have, I apologize for sharing it again. My first Sunday here, I was sitting in church at the Singles Ward. I started thinking about the Singles Ward back home. I started to worry about all the people. I wondered how they were doing and if they were OK. I longed to be back with them to help out however I could. And I learned a very important lesson. The Lord spoke to me and said, "Elder Richards why are you worried? Do you not know that they are in MY hands? Do you not know that I love them?" It was an amazing and a humbling experience. I realized that truly, we are ALL in The Lord’s hands. Every single one of us. Every single one of our Heavenly Father’s children. It was humbling, because I realized that any good I have ever been able to do for or with someone, was only because The Lord was using me to accomplish His will. It was amazing to realize such a thing. And that lesson has been reinforced a lot this past week. It makes things so much easier. When people tell us they are not interested in learning the message of the Restoration, I remember that they are in The Lord’s hands.
This past week, I have talked with a member family who adopted their niece and the struggles they have gone through with that. I saw a man bear his testimony in the Singles Ward for the first time. He has been inactive for over 10 years. He served in the Army Special Forces, and I watched the emotion in his eyes as he shared his experience. He has received his patriarchal blessing and was able to attend the temple for the first time. I heard him say that we were worth dying for, and I could feel the meaning behind his words as he understood what that meant.
I immediately thought of another who spoke the same words, "You are worth dying for." He not only meant it when He said He, but He fulfilled that promise. Our Savior came down and died for each and every one of us. It is my humble prayer that we never allow ourselves to forget that.
I love you all and continue to pray for you. I am grateful for your prayers in my behalf.
