Week 96 Missionary Email
Hello everyone!!!
A new mission president and a new era in the Perú Lima North Mission.
Arrival of President Brooks: We had a special meeting with President Brooks, where we got to know him a lot better and we got to know his style a lot better. He seems to be very focused on our spiritual wellness a lot more than baptisms. I am very excited to finish my last transfer under his leadership.
"Can't Come to Church": One of our friends who was progressing very fast sent us a text yesterday in the morning, telling us that he needed to call us "right now" and that it was a "life or death" situation. We gave him a call right then and there, and he and his family had just gotten a call from an extorsionist that knew where he and his family were living, and that if they didn't pay them a large amount of money, they would find out the consequences. Our friend's dad told him that he had to pick up one suitcase of things immediately and get out of the house. We haven't heard anything from him since. Pray for Armando
Eyes Focused on the End Goal: Lately, we have been working with a Facebook Referral who has had quite the past - he was abused as a kid and spent time as a teenager in and out of jail with gangs that told him he was the baddest man in the neighborhood. However, he always felt lost and wanted to start anew and set a better example for his kids. We started teaching him, and early on it was pretty obvious that he wanted to get baptized. However, he had a problem with alcohol, and he always said that the temptations of the devil were so strong that it was going to be hard for him to stop drinking. During this time that he was trying to stop, you could visibly see that he was fighting inside, trying to find the right. He didn't drink for a few days, so we set a baptismal date with him. However, that same Sunday, we caught him on his porch drinking, and we could tell immediately that he felt horrible. We didn't meet with him for a week and a half, and then we came back and taught him to decide if we should stop teaching him or not. He told us what happened the day before as he had went to go spend time with his friends, and they offered him a can of beer. He told us that he stared at the drink, and just refused to drink it. His friends persisted, but he told us that he stood strong, thinking constantly about getting baptized and being happy with his family. He never drunk, and he then asked when he could get baptized. He's got a goal for this week. It is really cool to see someone want something so bad that he is willing to leave behind a lifelong act that they know is bad to follow Jesus. He understands what it means, and he has a celestial perspective. He gets it.
