Week 92 Missionary Email

Hello everyone!!!

Transfers came and went and I finally have a north American companion!

Élder Bidstrup: My new companion is from Idaho Falls, Idaho. He is 20-years-old and going into his last transfer. He loves to play soccer, so South America suits him very well.

Whiteboard Magic: So in our area there's these giant condos that are private access. There's a bunch of people that live in these condos, but we cannot knock doors or proselyte inside, or else they will kick us out. However, there are always people at night coming home from work that live in these condos, walking around the condos. So, my comp and I had an idea. We decided to take an old white board we had in our apartment and tape Jesus cards to the front surrounding a message that says: "Cual tarjeta elegiría?", which means "Which card would you choose?". And so, we can successfully stop the person in their tracks in a natural way. Then, me or my comp takes out the card somewhat slowly while the other gets to know them and brings up our purpose. If they are super interested, we set an appointment. If not, we just get down their number and invite them to church.

Reflection on Whiteboard Idea: Using this idea has actually grown my testimony so much. It reminded me of the first two paragraphs of Preach My Gospel:

"You are surrounded by people. You pass them on the street and travel among them. You visit them in their homes and connect with them online. They are all children of God—your brothers and sisters. God loves them just as He loves you. Many of these people are searching for purpose in life. They are concerned for their future and their families. They need the sense of belonging that comes from knowing they are children of God and members of His eternal family. They want to feel secure in a world of changing values. They desire “peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come” (Doctrine and Covenants 59:23).

Every person chose a different card for a different reason. Some said that they liked a certain photo because Christ was ministering to someone. Some liked a simple portrait of Jesus because it showed his simple kindness. Some said that they didn't have time and really had to go, but sincerely thanked us for giving them the card, knowing it was from God. One even cried, saying that she was going through a really hard time in her life, and our simple act was evidence of God's love for her.

There truly are a lot of people in this world that don't know the true joy that comes from living the gospel of Christ. This experience helped me actually realize that being a missionary IS the most meaningful service anyone could ever give. It truly changes lives - and a lot of them.
