Week 27 Missionary Email
Hello everyone!!!!
Another week in a third-world country and things are starting to get a little more normal here. Never thought I would actually be saying that!!!
Earthquake #3: This one happened today and I was just sitting at my desk putting on my socks and shoes. My chair started to shake back and forth and it lasted for about 5 seconds. I got under the desk, hung out there for a minute, and went on with my day. It was a 5.0.
Toros Tracting: This past Tuesday I went on an exchange with Élder James Costello!!! He is the Leader of our Zone and I have known him since high school!! Weird catching up on past times and old friends again. I learned a ton from him and am excited to apply what I learned. Also my comp has been a different missionary since that exchange with the ZLs. Man I wonder what happened on that exchange hmmm 🤔
Uhhh You're Good Dude: A couple weeks back I asked for a Spanish tutor. Not because I was struggling, but because I wanted to sound more clear to the people we are teaching. We had the first tutoring session this week, and the tutor was still feeling me out. She asked for me to introduce myself, and I did. She then asked me why I wanted a tutor (all in Spanish) and I gave my reasons that I just wanted to expand my knowledge of the language and to never stop improving. Once I told her I only had 6 months in the mission, she freaked out. She said that I was WAY ahead of schedule and that I needed to chill out. I said thanks, but said that there is always room for improvement. She agreed and I told her the concepts that I wanted to improve on. She didn't even know what they were!! So, we ended the call and she said that she will start preparing for the next lesson. We'll see how it goes.
"According to Thy Faith": Lately, I have seen the horrifying hardships that people have here, living in a third-world country. We've been giving out a lot of blessings lately (I'm almost out of oil!). This week I sat in houses with families with unimaginable circumstances. One is a single mom (unemployed) with four kids (one of them a sick baby), and she doesn't have a stove to cook her kids food, so they have bread each night. Their Dad is in jail and awaiting his sentence in court. This week, the Mom took the baby to the hospital. This hospital was so low quality that they only had porta potties to use the bathroom. She was so thirsty she decided to drink out of the tap. She got so sick from the water waiting for her baby she developed a headache and a very high fever herself. They returned to their house at around 8 just in time for our visit, but they still let us in. She started crying, feeling overwelmed and hopeless. Then we went to another house of a family of members. Their Dad left them and the son had a severe form of cancer. So when we arrived at their home, she just explained her situation and burst into tears. She had looked at every hospital within 5 hours from their home, but no one had the treatment for her son. So interesting how both of these women said the exact same thing: "I know God loves me, but right now I just don't know if he has a plan for me". In both situations, we said that we could't imagine how they were feeling, and that all we could really do for them was give them a blessing and pray for them. We gave them blessings and they said they felt comforted. Whew! (That's good at least) Both women were healed within a day. Liz sent us a text the next morning saying that her fever was gone and she didn't have a headache anymore. The next day I saw this inactive family walk into church smiling for the first time ever (cancer-stricken son in all). I then thought about all the problems that we have in the world - cancer, poverty, bad hospitals, etc. And I realized that there is just no way I can solve them all. People need so much help around here, and sometimes I can feel a little useless when more problems come up. The only thing that I can really give them is hope. And that hope can only be found in Jesus Christ and His Gospel.
