Week 4 Missionary Email
Hello everyone!
Thank you for reading my email this week! Being a missionary has already blessed my life in so many ways! I love to write home and talk about my experiences!
One fun thing: Because we were so anxious for our reassignments, my companion and I decided to move around a little bit and shoot some hoops. It was fun to crush the other team and have one overconfident guy come in and say: "Let me guard him! I can take him!" And then completely embarrass him. My purpose as a missionary is to help others to come unto Christ. I am glad I can help everyone in their endeavors, especially humility. In all seriousness, it felt really good to put a ball in a hoop again. I am a much happier person when basketball is in my life.
One bad thing: The lines for food. Last Wednesday, there were 753 new missionaries that arrived at the MTC. As a result, I don't think I have ever seen such a long line for a bowl of Cap'n Crunch in my life. One day, we were waiting in line for dinner for 45 MINUTES. We didn't even end up getting food because we didn't want to be late for class. Because of this, my companion and I sat through a 3-hour class on an empty stomach. Lately, I have just avoided dinner altogether and cooked myself an Easy Mac along with a bowl of fruit to tide me over.
Conference at the MTC: Even though our district was assigned to watch conference in a crowded auditorium with thousands of people, I made the executive decision as district leader to watch conference in our classroom. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy it, as did I. As a missionary, it felt as if all of the talks were directed at me. I wrote down more notes than I ever have before, and I was completely focused the entire time. Once the Saturday evening session was over, I was actually looking forward to more General Conference the next day. I also loved that there were 20 NEW TEMPLES announced!!!! Including 2 in Peru!!!! The Lord is truly hastening his work. My favorite quote from conference was from Alan T. Phillips: "Some of the most real things in life are not seen, they are felt, known, and experienced." Already in my mission, I have felt, known, and experienced the love of God. I have been guided by Him through scary and hard things. The love of God is so real that it doesn't even need to be seen. It will always be there for us as long as we are trying to do His will.
The Big Announcement: First, I have to tell you about the draft. This might have been the single funnest missionary experience that I have had yet!!! The possibilities of where everyone was going seemed to be endless, and adrenaline was permeating throughout the room. I was super excited yet super nervous at the exact same time. The order of picking was completely random, we used little slips that the commissioner would pick out of a scripture bag. Then, I would open the door for the commissioner to walk out, and I would say: "The pick... IS IN." Someone else would then cue the music that is played before each pick at the NFL Draft. Once someone got their pick, they would shake the hand of the commissioner for a photo, and sometimes they would get an interview by some "reporters". The commissioner walked up to the stand, and said: "For the 9th pick in the 2023 MTC Draft, the BALTIMORE MARYLAND mission selects: Elder Rule!!!" I was sooooo excited!!!!! One of the things that I really wanted in my reassignment was a new place so that I could have some new experiences. Baltimore is definitely new for me. And it is completely on the other side of the country, so that will be very exciting! I have been looking at my mission and the mission's facebook page (this is all I can really do as a missionary to find out more about my mission) and it looks like my mission goes across 4 states! I could be serving in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, or Pennsylvania! I do not know if I am speaking Spanish or English. I am thrilled to serve the people in this area!!!!!!!!! I also received an email with my itinerary this morning, and it says that I will have a layover in Minneapolis. I am leaving next Thursday and will be flying for 7 hours that day.
Hope that y'all are doing well!! Thanks for reading!!
