Elder Ruan

Taiwanese Rain Storm

Hello from Asia!

The southern part of Taiwan got hit by a beast of a storm—leaving behind 35 inches of good ole' Taiwanese acid rain in 2 days. So for some good news, Elder 阮 and I will be staying in Tainan together for another transfer.

Well the storm was incredible. On Thursday, Elder Ruan and I bundled up in rain gear to go to District Council at the church. We were being blown off the road the whole time, and we had to stop a few times because the rain was blinding us. It was then that President, from sunny Taichung, realized it was stormin' and advised us not to die and play it safe. That left us with two days of being mostly in the apartment, and living off of KFC and McDonalds, the only stores left open.

On Friday night though, we were able to arrange to meet with one of our investigators, named Sophie, at a nearby 7/11. She is amazing and loves the gospel, but she thinks that since she did not grow up Christian she needs to catch up to our understanding of the scriptures. During the typhoon, she literally read 8 hours straight in the Bible and the Book of Mormon and cross referencing! I felt that we should share with her in 2 Nephi 28:30-32 about how we learn line upon line, precept upon precept. Not everything at once. Then she started drawing stuff out on a napkin, with a little guidance from us, she figured out herself that faith+action=blessings and then blessings lead to more faith. She declared it a "Beautiful circle". It’s true. Faith without works is dead, and we walked out with a goal for her to actually "act" and come to church.

Through the storm, I was able to do more in depth studies and found the scripture 1 Nephi 21:5:

5 And now, saith the Lord—that formed me from the womb that I should be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him—though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength.

Though Israel is not gathered, everyone has yet to accept the gospel, for when we know we are doing everything to please the Lord, our glory will be great in the eyes of the Lord. What more could we ask for? The gospel is true, and the Lord loves us!
