Just kidding. I actually love being senior companion. Especially since this is my 4th transfer in the Onyang area and these people have been my #1 joy the past 4 months ^^
Well hello hello again! Nice to chat with you again as always. In case you recently got a hair cut, nice hair cut frien! It looks clean ^^
haha quick embarassing fact about me: it took me 4 months to realize what ^^ means. It's a Korean smiley face! And I love it. So the English translation of :) is ^^ They always do this in texts. They also do these squiggles to express holding out the word ~~ And also this Korean character ㅠ (pronounced "you") is used to express sadness because two look like a crying face ㅠㅠ and so if something is mega sad then its just like this ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ (youyouyouyouyouyouyouyouyouyou).
While we're on the subject of you, unlike English (and probably a large majority of languages) Korean doesn't use the word "you." There is a word for you, its 당신 but its really offensive to use....unless if you're using it in prayer, because for some reason it's not offensive if you're saying it to, God...??? Idk why BUT it's actually really beautfiul that they don't use "you" because instead they just honorify they way they talk, and so if someone honorfies a sentence, you know they're talking to you! Because that's the Korean way, the Korean language, and culture in large, is very selfless, it's built on very beautiful and respectful principles :))
Hope you enjoyed Korean class ^^
So yeah! My trainer of 4 months is gone! And my companion is the lovely Elder Campbell. And what's absolutley crazy is that he's been in Korea for the same amount of time as me!! (He's a more experienced missionary than me though because he started with a reassignment and spent his first 4 monts in Texas, but they still made me senior companion.) He's really funny and crazy, and his Korean is SO GOOD!! When he met the people in our branch for the first time on Sunday, everyone was freaking out because his pronounciation is so good, they were calling him a Korean person hahaha He just adds this fun little extra spark to the area, and he gives me more confidence to try to be myself and not be afraid to make fun conversation with everyone. And I think the youth espeically loved seeing how funny the two of us are together ㅋㅋ
Kim Bo-Yun and his family are doing great! So lovely :) They make me happy. I'm especially excited for today (the 15th) because today is Korea's Independence Day! And the Kim family is going to take us to Independence Hall WOOT WOOT gonna learn about some sweet 한국 문화~~
I've been reflecting a lot about my growth this past week. And I've been thinking even more about what kind of growth I'm going to have this transfer. It's such an exciting thing :) My mom told me this once, she talked about finding joy while "becoming." We all wanna be a lot stronger, a lot smarter, a lot braver, a lot...better. And if we do the small and simple things day upon day, it'll happen! But until we reach that point, let's enjoy this period of "becoming," let's find joy in the growing pains. AHHH it's so awesome!! I love growing! I'm totally falling in love with the process of God just refining me, even when it hurts.
So.
Bad.
Because that's how the refiners fire works baby. And as I look back on the past 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, year, 2 years, 5 years....yesterday!! Yesterday I totally slept in for an extra hour YIKES! But today I was able to crawl myself out of bed #growth As I look back on my life i just see all the incredible ways I've been slowly becoming more like the Savior through His Atonement. And it makes me so happy to see how you, my lovely friends and family, are growing too! Oh man though, is it hard to see growth in ourselves. It makes sense, like watching grass grow at 10,000 frames/sec.
One of my favorite movies ever, "The Price of Egypt," has this incredible song "Through Heaven's Eyes" that really sheds light on how to see our own individual growth. Here's verse 1:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A single thread in a tapestry
Though its color brightly shines
Can never see its purpose
In the pattern of the grand design
And the stone that sits on the very top
Of the mountain's mighty face
Does it think it's more important
than the stones that form the base?
So how can you see what your life is worth
Or where your value lies?
You can never see through the eyes of man
You must look at your life
Look at your life through heaven's eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So here's the answer. Look at your life through Heaven's eyes. Or in other words, to align our vision and our heart with God's. Sometime I make lil' doodles during my personal studies. At one point this week, along with a fun doodle, I wrote about the joy of moments where it feels like your heart is perfectly centered in Christ, when it hits perfect center, it feel like youre floating. The indescribable feeling of the Holy Ghost, those perfect moments where it feels like your soaring through the most heaven-lit sky, moments where it takes your breath away....
I guess thats why I'm doing this mission thing. I hope I can be of some help to help others discover this feeling for themselves ^^ <33
Love you all so much. It might sound cliche or not personal, but I promise I've thought of you, yeah you, many times lately. So keep it up! And again, your hair cut looks really good :)
