Mother's Day

Hi everyone!

Elder Ashton didn't send a letter this week but he did get to Skype with us on Mother's Day. It was already Monday morning for him when we got the 'call' on Sunday night and we got to see his smiling face. He is doing really well, and enjoying the mission. His sister was at home and of course mom, dad and brother Josh, so it was a fun hour chatting with him. The internet was great-both mine and theirs so that was a relief considering how far away Hong Kong is.

He and his companion were at a member's house/apartment that was across from theirs so he flipped the laptop and showed us his building. He said the missionaries are on the 40th floor and the building has 46 floors. He also said they are pretty small apartments, so the room they sleep in has two bunk beds smashed up against each other to fit. Close enough that one of the other missionaries who sleeps basically next to him, snatched his blanket in the night one time. Haha!

He loves the food, he enjoys the teaching. He says his Cantonese is still not great and his companion is better but they study language every day, as well as personal and companion religious study.

We asked about teaching English to little kids and he said that it's a great place for families to be introduced to the church by the local members. The key thing that seems to make a difference is members of the church reaching out and inviting non members to opportunities the church offers. That way they're with their friends and also ask questions about the gospel. They have several people who are investigating now because they are invited by friends rather than the missionaries just randomly finding people who are interested.

Over the previous week I received a couple of pictures of him from these very supportive members in Hong Kong. Some were of him and some other missionaries teaching English, and another from a family that fed them dinner. He's holding peanuts on his chopsticks, apparently it's a challenge to get more than one or two on there-and he's got 5. So I'm sharing those. I'm sure we'll hear a real update next week but just wanted to share with you.
