Another week bites the dust! It’s been such a quick week with zone conference and all the preparation we did for that, and doing missionary work. It’s so interesting how busy missionary work can make you if you let it!
We exchanged with the other Elders in our apartment, and it was a blast! Elder Baugh and I were together while Elder Hunziker stayed in our area with Elder Pudelko. Elder Baugh and I had way too much fun as we went about talking to people and teaching the gospel on the streets. One thing I noticed about Elder Baugh is how friendly and open he is with everyone we come into contact with. He made street contacting people all day so much fun! We saw a lot of miracles that day, and were placed in the path of people who we were able to touch. We also had a lot of funny moments! At one point we were at the park in our area waiting for a lesson to happen, and the other Elders walked by! We watched them walk up the street and talk to a lady around the corner from us. Elder Hunziker and I had never gone to the neighborhood where all four of us were at, but that day, and even though we have the car, we ran into each other! Another experience comes to mind; we taught one of their investigators who’s around our age, maybe a couple years older. He asked us a question that he didn’t have an answer to, that to him couldn’t be a short answer: “who and what is God?” I’m so grateful for the restored gospel that allows us to not only know and understand this question and the answer that follows, but the simplicity of the answer. As we taught him in two minutes or less who God was and his connection to him, it helped him see more of the answer he was looking for.
Zone Conference was here in Salem this time! Both our zone and the adjacent zone met up at the stake center for an awesome conference. It was really good to see all the friends I’ve made here on my mission, and to see a lot of my old past companions! We learned a lot about how to be better teachers as missionaries. How we can improve our ability to teach the lessons found in Preach My Gospel, and how we can teach simply, so that we are able to teach any one of the lessons in five minutes or less! I know I learned a lot! One thing that stood out to me was something President Tateoka said: “Preach My Gospel was designed beyond the veil, and assembled here.” I think he was quoting a general authority, but I love that idea that yes, PMG was written by prophets for missionary work specifically, and yes they received revelation as they wrote it, but when President Tateoka said that, it brought more meaning to how I feel about PMG. All the more reason to continue to use it!
Another morning we met a man on the street we taught the restoration to, but he didn’t give us any contact information, so we weren’t going to be able to return and teach him more. Then, at the end of the day, right when we were coming in for the evening, we got a referral for the same man, with all his contact information! The Lord blessed us because we tried our hardest to teach everyone we came into contact with about the restored gospel.
I read a lot about Lehi and his family traveling through the wilderness this past week. I love 1 Nephi 10:17-19:
17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God--and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come--I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.
18 For he is the same yesterday, today, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him.
19 For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.
What I love about it is how God is willing to give us guidance, revelation, and direction when we ask. Nephi asked in faith, believing that God would reveal to him the exact thing that his father saw. Chapter 11 is Nephi’s experience with the tree of life. I know that God is no respecter of persons and is willing to give us direction to our prayers when we ask in faith.
