PREVIOUSLY, on THE LIFE OF ELDER ROUNDY...
(skip if you read my last email)
I was set apart on Tuesday night as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints! In spite of my assumptions that the Home MTC would be a piece of cake, it has been a rollercoaster of events, emotions, and interesting encounters! On Wednesday I had a half-P-day, where I did laundry, got my clothes together, and got to know my district. Thursday, the classes REALLY began, and I found myself handling pronunciations pretty well, but struggling with finding my words in Spanish. On Friday, Me and my companion became District Leaders! We were also taught about SYL, which has been a bit of a challenge to keep up with. Saturday the work continued, and my relationship with my companion got even better! Sunday, I gave a talk in church, saw my friend Michelle Young's talk, and had FHE with my district. Then the crazy stuff began! Monday and Tuesday were both pretty hard with no power, freezing temperatures, and a goal to still attend all my online classes... Wednesday I had enough power to write and post my email, and spent most of the day simply prepping for the week, reading up on what I needed to get done...
AND NOW, the STORY of THIS WEEK...
Thursday ~ February 18th
Summary: Power's Back! Spanish Attack! β‘π¬π€·πΌββοΈ
Details:
Due to the slow thawing of the freezing weather, the power has stayed ON! They sent us a message confirming that it will hopefully not go off again... but it's definitely hard to be sure. Between classes today, Elder Rasmussen and I invented ZOOM BATTLESHIP, which is pretty fun, and is something I'd consider to be companionship-building.
I began interviewing the elders today, as per my job as District Leader, to see how they're doing, what they're struggling with, and how we as District Leaders can improve.
Without going into too much detail, Elder Leski is an incredibly intelligent guy, and has a vast knowledge of the scriptures, and I'm inspired by his sincere testimony and determination to serve!
In the morning class today, they invited fluent Spanish speakers from Mexico to call over Zoom and talk with each companionship. Despite how difficult this sounds, Elder Rasmussen and I actually handled ourselves pretty well, and I could understand about 80% of what they were saying!
As it goes for the snowy situation, even with the lights on we have been given a boil water mandate, and the water is all YELLOW. It has been very hard to decide between skipping showers and being stinky, or showering in yellow water, and being "clean?"
I did realize today, though, that being grumpy about the water is kind of ungrateful, considering our house is now warm again, and I can breathe and feel secure, which is exactly what I asked from God. I have so much to be grateful for, for sure!
Friday ~ February 19th
Summary: Visit from the Boss and P.E. Flashbacks π¨πΎπ π₯΅ππ»ββοΈ
Details:
Today has been more secure, for sure! We have plenty of bottled water to last through this poison water dealio, and that's good!
In class today, this supervisor guy came and took it over. It was clear he was older and higher-up than our teacher, and he gave us a lot of challenges/goals that were heftier than what Hermana Moreno (our teacher) had been assigning us! He was very energetic, and kind of goofy, but it was alright.
Also, during our break in the middle of the day, we had to attend a mandatory gym class that involved jumping push-ups, crazy glute stretches, and loads of squats... needless to say, I didn't do so well! π₯΅
Other than that, I've continued making fun memes for my mission friends, and life is good! (But it can be better...)
I also have a spiritual lesson from today- Hope of Israel, the hymn, in Spanish is called Youth of Israel, further confirming the truth that the youth today are the hope of the church, and have more impact than they realize.
Saturday ~ February 20th
Summary: Interviews and Viral Rap! πππ€
Details:
Today was long, tiring, but fun!
My classes went well, and life is good. I finished up all the interviews today, and I gotta say, my district is the BEST! The elders and sisters each have unique strengths and weaknesses, and I feel very good about how everything turned out. As part of this, I assigned Hermana Vaughn and Hermana Pratt to be in charge of the sister interviews. This companionship of sisters is super cool! Hermana Pratt is very fun to talk to, and is pretty outgoing, and Hermana Vaughn has a crazy ton of Spanish skill, and is very wise beyond her years. I feel like I was inspired to pick them to help the interview process.
Today was also the day I released my first RAP on Facebook! I have been a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and rapper on my YouTube channel for the past 4 or so years, but it definitely feels different posting a rap to show my missionary friends, which was actually received very well! It's called PLAN of SALVATION - The RAP, if you wanna look it up, and I got loads of comments and reactions on that post.
Beyond this, a group of elders from another district invited me to their zoom call because they saw my rap and enjoyed it so much. They were very fun to hang out with, and it makes me feel good that people I hardly know also enjoyed what I posted!
My spiritual thought from today is that if you give yourself up and open yourself up, others will follow you if it is right. That is how I've led the district!
Sunday ~ February 21st
Summary: Family Church, Feeling Sick, FHE, and Mold in the Floor! π¨βπ©βπ¦βπ¦π€π»π¦
Details:
Today was very good! I slept in and woke up at 10 (instead of 6:30am like usual) and we did church! Due to the "frozen roads" (which have now thawed, but are still called frozen?) church was cancelled and we were counseled to hold our own church at home.
I personally LOVE home church because it shows just how much you can still do within the walls of your home, such as preparing the sacrament, singing hymns, and having spiritual discussions. I'm so grateful to be worthy of my Priesthood power, to be able to help officiate in these ordinances!
Today a small swollen throat that had begun to creep in has hit full blast, and it's hard to swallow and feels like swollen tonsils. I've been drinking loads and loads of bottled water, and have switched to carrying a gallon jug around with me, everywhere I go.
Today's FHE with my district was super fun! Elder Leski gave a spiritual lesson on the importance of selecting friends and influences that inspire, over those that don't. He shared insightful points on how everything we allow into our lives affects us whether we realize it or not, things such as advertisements, social media, friends, food, movies, TV shows, etc. It was a very good lesson!
For the FHE activity, we did a game called "Righteous vs Wicked" which is based on a YouTuber trend called Angels vs Devils. Both center on a concept where one team is tasked with drawing a picture online of a happy scenario, and then the other team tries to turn it into a terrible scenario. The teams go back and forth until the drawing is so hilariously convoluted, you can't tell what's going on anymore. We all had a good laugh, and it was interesting to see how easily the elders slipped into the role of "wicked" π€£π€£π€£
In more saddening news, we discovered today that the tile in our living room and kitchen has MOLD inside it!! I stayed up a bit later than I usually do to help clean and move things out of the way so we could deal with the problem. Between the mold and the yellow poison water, I'm not surprised that I've felt sick.
However, not that this is the greatest news, my swollen throat has slowly departed and turned into a stuffy nose?
Monday ~ February 22nd
Summary: Runny Nose, Nervous Class, D&C, D&D, and Chick-Fil-A! π€§π
π§π»ββοΈβππ
Details:
Today was very good! Morning classes were very fun, which was nice.
My nose is seriously stuffy and runny and sneezy, and I've used up a whole box of tissues, but on the plus side, I've got no more throat issues! π
In the afternoon class, Hermana Moreno paused her normal lesson to give us a "hypothetical" example of a missionary who looks on facebook, and scrolls through emails, during online classes. A lot of the elders, myself included, started to kind of sweat nervously... and I'll just leave it at that... π
I have grown even more with my companion, Elder Rasmussen, through conversations about D&D! I sent out a post a while ago (can't remember when) sharing my Discipleship and Combat game with all the missionaries in the MTC. They thought a Book of Mormon D&D knockoff was super cool! Elder Rasmussen also likes this game, and he's going to play in my campaign that I will be doing on Tuesdays 1-3pm on zoom!
Also, HUGE thanks to Michelle Young's grandma, who brought our family Chick-Fil-A after hearing about all our misfortune with the moldy floor and all- you're super awesome! ππππ₯€
Tuesday ~ February 23rd
Summary: Lofty Goals, D&C Adventures, and An Awesome Mommy! πββ°π©π»π
Details:
Today was very interesting! My morning class was very fun, but was also pretty difficult. My teacher announced that he wants to challenge us to memorize at LEAST 54 Spanish words and 9 Spanish phrases every day! ππ
(As it is Tuesday, it is a half P-Day, which is the case every week. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning merge into a P-Day, if you will.)
After class was over, I held my D&C campaign! Our party is pretty cool, made up of 2 Heavy Warriors, an agile Swift Warrior, a Wanderer, and a Visionary Seer. We bought our supplies in the town market, made our way up the mountain towards our destination, tamed a wild baby ocelot, and killed a Gadianton Robber! We then spent the rest of the time fighting over who got to keep the loot off the guy's body, which was kinda funny. All in all, we had 7 people come, and they all thought the game was very well thought out and super cool, which I appreciated!
Once we finished the D&C session, I went on a walk with my Momma around the church across the street, picked up some trash, and practiced Spanish while we were at it. I sincerely LOVE and APPRECIATE my momma SO MUCH! She is such a sweet, beautiful, awe-inspiring, wonderful example of someone who has been through so much, and keeps wanting to help others. I am so blessed and thankful that she is in my life, and that I still get to be with her while I'm at home MTC. I love you mom! π₯°β€π
Also, at some point recently, the water stopped being yellow and we were sent a message saying the water is now safe!
We came back inside the house, had dinner, and did our family prayer.... today was a nice break!
Wednesday ~ February 23rd
Summary: P-Day, Writing my Email! ππ§Ύ
Details: Today I woke up crazy late (since it's P-Day) and got to work on my emails, laundry, and other goals! So far it's been pretty good! Also, my snotty nose is basically back to normal, and other than mild drowsiness and soreness, I feel almost normal!
MAIN EVENTS:
-Interviewed my entire district with the help of Hermanas Vaughn and Pratt
-Wrote, filmed, and posted a successful religious rap video!
-Got sweaty for the first time in forever, since the weather is now in the 70's
-Totally failed Gym Class, but I'm not even mad lol
-Led a D&C campaign, and received positive responses
-Regained full power and normal, non-poisonous water!
-Was given loads of expectations that I couldn't begin to meet without my mom!
MY TESTIMONY: I know that God loves and cares for each of us, and He sees us in our trials. I know that when we are struggling, there is always going to be a day when our struggles are relieved, and we can breathe easy. Sometimes that day takes much longer than we expect, but if we never give up hope, God will be there for us. God stops providing once we stop believing. So believe, live, love, and enjoy this life! En el nombre de Jesucristo, Amen.
MY DISTRICT and TEACHERS:
Elder Rasmussen: My companion, my companero, my brochacho, this guy is hilarious! He always has the best jokes, and always is eager to learn more, grow more, and get better. I have loved watching him progress in Spanish, and have seen so much improvement in him since the days have gone by! I definitely think that he is an epic companion.
Elder Holmes: He is a straight up "holm"-ie if you will, and is quite the joker, too. He has some bomb spiritual thoughts from time to time, and a pretty solid Spanish accent when he speaks. He is a companion with Elder Leski
Elder Leski: Spiritual and intellectual giant, easily the most well-read elder in the crew. He's got loads of doctrinal knowledge, spiritual insight, Spanish vocabulary, and is probably the most diligent and focused out of all the elders. He is a companion with Elder Holmes.
Elder Webber: Honestly super legit and cool, Elder Webber has always got fun ideas, and hilarious comments during class. He's always got a nice smile on his face, and he is friendly to just about everyone! He is a companion with Elder Minton.
Elder Minton: Talk about a solid bro! I know pretty much all the elders have been given high praise, but I mean each and every bit of it. Elder Minton (or Meentone as the Spanish teachers pronounce it) is very insightful, kind of quiet, but all around knows how to both focus and party at the same time. Very balanced and firm. He is a companion with Elder Webber.
Hermana McClaine: I don't know as much about the sisters as I do the elders, but Hermana McClaine is definitely a go-getter. She is probably called on way too often for devotionals and such, but always has something epic to say! She is a companion with Hermana Ukle.
Hermana Ukle: Very good at pronouncing Spanish, and has a solid Spanish vocabulary, too. Though she is shy, when she speaks up it's always something worth listening to! She is a companion with Hermana McClaine.
Hermana Paul: Definitely unique and fun, Hermana Paul is a very thoughtful and solid missionary. She's improved on Spanish a ton, and gives great spiritual thoughts. She is a companion with Hermana Andersen.
Hermana Andersen: Probably the most smiley sister, Hermana Andersen got a bad start due to her wifi cutting out the whole first week, but despite that drawback, as soon as she got better signal she's come out full swing with loads of spiritual stuff and solid Spanish skills! She is a companion with Hermana Paul.
Hermana Pratt: Definitely one of the more talkative sisters, Hermana Pratt is super friendly and actually has some background in the Spanish language since her mom speaks it! She's also a descendant of Orson Pratt and Parley P. Pratt which is epic! She is a companion with Hermana Vaughn.
Hermana Vaughn: For sure has the most Spanish experience out of the entire district, Hermana Vaughn knows her stuff! She's begun teaching a class in between classes to help those who are struggling in Spanish, and she also is very funny and spiritual as well. She is a companion with Hermana Pratt.
Hermano Casteneda: What a dude! This guy is our morning class instructor, and like pretty much everyone who works in the Mexico MTC, he is a Mexican, and has exceptional English and Spanish. His classes are always very fun and interesting, and he isn't afraid to be our friend, either.
Hermana Moreno: Wow! Talk about intelligent! Hermana Moreno leads the afternoon class, and is very wise and smart in spite of both her and Hermano Casteneda being only a year or two past their missions. She's not afraid to lay down the law, but is also very sweet and personable as well.
PICTURE LOG:
-Battleship game between me and Rasmussen
-A funny thing I noticed about how the teacher say "Berv" instead of "Verb" when teaching
-It was Elder Webber's birthday! We all surprised him and celebrated for a bit in Hermano Casteneda's class
-Discovered that the elder companionships last name letters make a cool insignia thing
-Elder Webber was the first person to invent a fake name for our mission discussion roleplays, so I thought he deserved a nice meme
-Map for the D&C campaign that I made!
-A new &Collar meme format I found
-This meme is about this one time where Hermana Pratt thought a woodcutter was a beaver in Spanish
-More &Collar goodness!
-A helpful way to pronounce Spanish, in meme form!
-Several posts I had made a while ago on instagram that I reposted to the MTC group
