Eastgate Ohio

Elder Pickett

Shovels mightier than the sword?

This week was amazing! The snow finally came through.  One day it was 60 degrees and the next it was 27!  It didn't stop the work from moving forward.  Elder Pickett and I kept whistling right up Rocky Ridge all the way into Zion!
On Saturday (Which was the day it snowed all day) we looked at our schedule and saw nothing on it...  We were little worried that we might be walking around in the snow all day!  Then to make things worse we got a call from someone we were teaching and she told us that she wanted to come to church but her husband won't let her.  We were really frustrated, but we tried to not let it bother us. We knew it was Gods timing.
During planning we decided that we would bring our shovels wherever we went in order to shovel peoples driveways.  At one point we were in the area of the lady that had dropped us, so we shoveled her driveway.  It felt good to be able to do that service, even though she probably didn't even know we did it.
Jumping back to Friday.  We had a lesson with a guy named Kevin.  He questions whether there is a God.  He has had so many things happen to him that suggests there is a God, but he is still a little skeptical.  We showed him "Hope of Gods light" on the LDS media and he came to the conclusion, on his own, that he needed to fast.  We thought that was a great idea. He fasted last week then on Friday we met with him to follow up.  He told us he didn't have some miraculous event happen, but he did recognize something out of the ordinary.  As he was fasting he began to get a headache, he is diabetic so he knew that if it got worse he would need to eat or drink.  He began to pray and ask God to allow him to finish his fast.  As the fast continued the headache never went away, but it never got worse.  He knew this was God helping him continue his fast! We have been teaching him for a long time now.  He has been doing everything right, but still doesn't believe he has received a witness that the Book of Mormon is true.  I have been frustrated a lot with him and God.  "Why wouldn't God answer his prayers?" "Why can't I say something that will click with him?"  I think to myself.  Then this week I was reading in 1 Nephi 18. At this point Nephi and the family are on the ship headed towards the promised land.  Laman and Lemuel tie Nephi up and threaten to take away his life.  The liahona stops working and the ship is about to sink.  Everyone on the ship seems to recognize this except for Laman and Lemuel.  Nephi's family begins to plead with Laman and Lemuel to let him go, but it doesn't work.  Verse 20 says, "And there was nothing save it were the power of God, which threatened them with destruction, could soften their hearts." When I read this I realized, once again, this is God's work and it is all about His timing.I know that when Kevin accepts the gospel it will because he was ready and God gave him an answer that he needs to do it!
I love being representative of Jesus Christ!  I am so grateful to be here in Ohio working with such amazing people, learning even more amazing things!
Love y'all
