Elder Emerson Moraes

Really Good week!!!

We do a lot of things as missionaries, but there isn't anything we do that is quite as rewarding, or important, as inviting others to come unto Christ. The crazy thing is that the joy comes whether or not the people choose to accept the invitations to act! As you testify that the Gospel is true and that what you are inviting them to do will bless their life, the Spirit rains down joy like manna from heaven, and that completely independent of another person's actions. We really hope that they accept. But our happiness is independent. It's not the trip, or the number of people that we baptize, or the people skills we learn, it's the joy of the Spirit that comes to purify us and the forgiveness from our sins, all this happens when we open our mouths and declare His words! God is pleased when we desire what He also desires, and His desire is for all of His children to accept the gospel and be born again. (3 Nephi 27:20) The challenge is for us to open our mouths without fear and invite in the same way that the Savior invites, with patience and love but also with urgency and boldness.

Monday (Segunda)
Zone conference in Marília (São Paulo) with the São Paulo Zone. What a Zone! I think part of the Spirit that we feel comes from the preparation and attitude of the missionaries. When we come to receive revelation, we get what we asked and sought for. Really good trainings there and a great Spirit. Got Açaí on the way home and invited the people at the Açaí place to church. The drive is 2.5 hours so by the time we got home it was time to sleep.

Tuesday (Terça)
The last Zone Conference was in Londrina with the other Londrina Zone, Tiradentes. I discovered that Elder Alves was a professional boxer before the mission and so we had a good lunch talking about his boxing career. In all the Zone Conferences, the training that we gave grew and developed as we adapted it to the different zones. I felt happy in being able to relay President Nelson's invitation to the missionaries in Brazil to study and learn to use the Book of Mormon, especially chapters 11-30 of 3 Nephi, in our teaching to help people understand how much the restored Church of Jesus Christ has to offer! In a predominantly Christian nation full of different denominations, we as missionaries sometimes struggle to help people understand that this isn't just one more church. President Nelson explained quite clearly that the people from the other sects that are kept from the truth because they know not where to find it (D&C 123:12) will be interested to know that Jesus Christ visited the Americas as well, which is something that only the restored church of Jesus Christ believes!!! We practiced using the Book of Mormon to interest people that call us Mormons in knowing the reason why we have the nickname, and what the real focus of the church is, the Savior Jesus Christ!
Tuesday night we had our first English Connect class, and it looks like it is going to be a huge success!!! We were surprised to find 15 people, 10 of them not members, there in the first session, and we hope to keep growing the class!!! Pray for us that we will be able to make friends with who is coming, and that it will lead to good teaching opportunities!!! We think that the English Connect program should become well known here in Londrina! Lots of university students need to learn English for their Majors, and what better than a free class with native professors! This is the goal, to teach many of them the gospel. Pray that we will be able to have these opportunities.

Wednesday (Quarta) Good district council. The Zone Leaders came. We also had a good lesson with Ana. She is progressing a lot, and for someone who is only 10 years old, she asks really good questions. Pray for her and for her family, we are trying to help get her mom interested in the church to be able to take her, right now the members are being really nice and giving her rides. We are doing our best to make a stronger friendship with her mom and big brother, but it's hard to find them at home. We need a member of the family to be involved in the teaching process, which right now is mostly online. We will try and work with her grandma who has a car to bring her. We're desperate to involve the family. All prayers are appreciated. Wednesday night we had our first ward integration night which we planned with the Elders Quorum. It really went down well!!! We were in splits with the Zone leaders, so Elder Da Silva and I gave a really fun message about being a missionary and one of the members put together a fun activity where you wrote something nice and some defect of the person sitting next to you on a paper, then put it in a bag and everyone got a random one and had to read about their neighbor. It was fun and there was a gospel connection about looking for the good. Afterwards there was volleyball but we had to leave.

Getting to know Elder Da Silva a little better was really fun. He encountered the church when he was 17 and he has an incredibly strong testimony and believes that there are people out there waiting to hear our message. Teaching with him was fun. We went on a wild goose chase to the UEL (Londrina State University) and were able to teach three lessons to the security guys who gave other great references, even though the real reason we were there was to try to print some things and see our friend João at the University library, which turned out to be closed. It was fun to see the college, and we stopped to make online contacts at the Mesa Filosofal (philosophical table). It made for a good photo shoot. It was good for him to see the college too, he may be the first generation of his family to go to university, and that is a pretty big deal.
I stayed with Elder Pedroso and Elder Miranda after Elder Da Silva caught the 06:30 bus. We had a good run and talked about church history. Then we did online contacting and visited two young men that went to church, Ana invited them both. This was our first time teaching their grandpa and aunt that they live with, they are pretty strong in their church, but the visit was good as we made friends and presented t restoration. The kids like the church but we've got to find a way to involve the family for them to keep going. We went and visited Gabriel after as well, with a member named Roberto. He helped a lot in the lessons, and his family is having a pretty hard time right now with some health challenges, it was good to listen and offer at least a hug. No one escapes from hard times, but I was amazed at his positive attitude and his willingness to serve.

Keep praying and studying. I'd like to testify that in the standard works and General Conference is the spiritual protection that we need to avoid getting deceived, because there are a lot of deceptions out there. I take comfort in the promise:
29 Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked
30 And land their souls, yea, their immortal souls, at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven, to sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and with Jacob, and with all our holy fathers, to go no more out

Good stuff,

-Elder Wells
