So branding cattle is actually quite the interesting process. We helped out on the church ranch again, only this time it was more involved.
In the corral, there was two metal loops attatched to the ground by a rope. Two people on horses would lasso two calves each, drag them to the metal loops where someone would put the loop over the calves head. Then by pulling taught the rope, the Calf is restricted and can be injected with Vaccines, marked, branded, and if it's a male- castrated (yeah, it's as brutal as it sounds tbh. They just cut off the you-know-whats and rip it all out, the particulars were lying all over the corral ground) 🐮🥜
I helped out with the injections. When the Calf was in place, I would either inject it in the muscles part on top of the neck, or if they were moving around a lot, someone would kneel on their neck and pull up the front leg and I would inject it in the armpit.
You get weirdly used to the sound of calves screaming, it's like the most unpleasant asmr ever.
We did a lot, took all morning and I think we did around 100 or so. I ended up with so much dust in my hair it looked like a lighter shade of Brown!
There's a guy we're hoping to start teaching, who we were kind of worried about because he went missing and his trailer disappeared. But then one day he shows up with this brand new super expensive trailer, and a brand new 90k Chevy truck. Which was a big turnaround from his previous trailer. Anyways, it turns out he won a settlement over a stolen tractor, so he went on kind of a spending spree.
We were helping him move his old stuff into his new trailer, and he shows us a pair of brand new combat boots he bought. He said they didn't fit him, so he told me to try them on. They fit, so he just gave them to me! So that was pretty cool. Walked around the rest of the day wearing em because they were too cool.
Last p day we drove up an awesome Rocky road that led to radio towers overlooking the entire valley. It was a fun drive, but we took a wrong turn on the way back and ended up at a dead end. But we saw an access trail that looked pretty good, so we started going down that. But parts of it had gotten washed out, so we were almost at a 45 degree angle at some parts, so we accidentally ended up off reading, but it was pretty fun.
Met with some interesting characters this week, one returning member proudly put up his confederate flag for memorial day, but he told us he "didn't have a racist bone in his body", which is cool but maybe the flag didn't have the same vibes lol. 🤔
Went to the graduation in Alamo. That was pretty cool, they only had a graduating class of 21 people so a lot smaller than my 420 graduating class. But the whole town came out to support them.
💛 Huge miracle! Shasta is now on date for baptism! She's overcoming a lot of judgement from her family and just going for it, it's awesome to see. Thank you for all your prayers and your love, it means the world!
This is what I've learned this week-
Love when it's hard, and you will love harder.
Jesus didn't say to love when it's easy or convenient, he said to love when it's your enemy, love when it's difficult. I testify that putting love before jusgement will result in a happier life and better relationships with others and God.
Hope you all have a great week, hope your quesadillas are extra crispy, hope your crepes are extra crepey.
Most sincerely, with best regards, and a brief moment to contemplate existence,
