Hola! ¿Como Estas?
That's Spanish for, "hey, what's up, also by the way we're missionaries for the Church of Jesus christ can we share this really cool book with you?"
At least, that's what I hope it means because my Spanish is pretty rusty- but I had a lot of chances to use it this week! I can comprehend a surprising amount already, but trying to speak it is a different ball game.
Bishop Perkins is trying to make a Spanish branch here, but he's starting with quarterly events called "Noche De Amigos". We helped with the very first one, and we were asked to invite the Hispanic people who lived and worked at at the Western Elite dump down the highway about 40 min. They lived in a line of camp trailers, and me and Elder Powell just invited about 15 people who only spoke Spanish using our broken white boy spanglish. It was awesome.
The event itself didn't have too many people show up, but on exchanges me and Elder Lewis (who speaks spanish) had dinner with an awesome couple who only spoke Spanish, and they made this awesome Venezuelan food called Arrepas- it was like a fried baked dough circle, you cut it open with a knife and put in butter, cheese, meat, and a garlic green salsa. It was very, mucho Bueno.
On Saturday, we ended up doing several unplanned service projects, until it became basically the whole day! And with the sun out, I got a nice farmer tan.
We helped move the chicken coop and fencing for our neighbors, we had to help dig the holes for the posts, move the gate, roll up and put up the fencing. The chickens were no help at all and just watched.
There was also an older non member couple moving out, so we helped them. Their garage was stacked to the roof with stuff, mostly garbage, but the dude didn't want to get rid of anything. But we knew the member who was moving in didn't want any of his garbage still there, so we tried to facilitate the removal of useless garbage. I don't think he really wanted us there, we kind of volunteered ourselves and just started helping lol.
We also helped dig out and remove a big tree stump, and move a rabbit pen.
So, that was a fun day. Felt like having a real job or something. Probably reactivated my sprained wrist though, so it may take a little while longer to heal.
I found my new favorite scripture, which is Alma 26:16! Alma 26 is just Ammon talking about how awesome God is, and he goes on for quite a while, but then he says this;
16 Therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the Lord; yea, we will rejoice, for our joy is full; yea, we will praise our God forever. Behold, who can glory too much in the Lord? Yea, who can say too much of his great power, and of his mercy, and of his long-suffering towards the children of men? Behold, I say unto you, I cannot say the smallest part which I feel.
I can relate to Ammon here- I cannot say the smallest part which I feel, because my understanding and love for my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ has grown so much on my mission I cannot describe it. There isn't enough words in the English language, or any other, for me to say how I feel.
I've learned that understanding the character of Christ leads to a better understanding of how to live life. For real.
