Letter 21
KLK everyone!
It's me again. Another week in the books and it was pretty good. Christmas was pretty chill. We didn't really do anything because Christmas is a lot different here. Everyone just gets drunk, so we couldn't really proselyte. Everyone was either out of town or drunk, so we just played games with some other missionaries in our district and ate ceviche. It was nice. We are prob going to do the same thing tomorrow for New Years. I weighed my self this week and I've gained... 3 kilos! which is like 6 or 7 pounds! Apparently missionary work makes you extra hungry.
This week was honestly a little tough. Three of our investigators with fechas left the area. One of them moved, another went to Sullana and another one went to Lima on vacation for 3 months, so that was a big blow for us. Especially because all three of them had real potential and were progressing. But, that's missionary work. We still have lots of opportunities to have a successful transfer though, if we put in the work these last three weeks. We are working with a 17 year old girl named Maryury who is really awesome. She already said she wants to get baptized. She just wants a little more time to learn more and feel more prepared. The other one is this dude named Jose who is about 50 or so. He is also super awesome. He came to church after only one contact. We talked to him for like 5 minutes about the Restoration and invited him to church. That following Sunday, he came! We were like, "What are you doing here? No one every really comes just after one contact!" haha. So, he's also progressing really well. Those two are our focus right now.
There's some pretty crazy stuff here that happens in Piura. I don't know why, but a lot of people practice witch craft. At first I was like whatever, I don't see any wands anywhere. But, let me tell you this weird thing that happened to me. One of the last days that Elder Guzman was with me, we were eating in the house of one of the investigators that we were teaching because it was his mom's birthday. Everything was going good. The mom was acting a little crazy, but Ive seen a lot of crazy people, so I didn't think anything of it. Then she sat down next to us and talked kind of quietly and she said, "I have something bad inside me, everyone told me to get rid of it, but I didn't listen." This is where it got a little weird. There was a photo of her that was propped up backwards and it just fell forward off of the shelf. There was no wind or anything. I was watching the picture the whole time. I don't know how it moved. Then she said, "That was me that did that". So, we quickly finished our food and we left haha. I'm not saying that there's some black magic in my area, but It was definitely a weird experience.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a happy New Year. I'll be here with all of the borachos of Peru if you need me. haha
