I don't even know where to begin to describe the events of the past two weeks. I have seen some really terrible things ever since the flood that have really opened up my eyes to both why I'm out here on a mission and how grateful I am for all that I left behind. A lot of people lost a lot in the floods over here; possessions, homes, pets, and even loved ones in some cases. It's very heart aching to be with someone just days after having lost nearly everything. They always seem to be in a state of just complete and utter shock. That has lead me to ponder greatly as to what I could possibly do to help them besides rip up their sewage soaked carpets and throw away what's left of their furnature and belongings. With that in mind, one of the goals I've set for this experience is to maintain a happy attitude and strive to bring a sense of joy into the people's lives that I'm serving and serving with. Sometimes that means saying a dumb joke or singing a song when shoveling sewage. I have this to report on that goal thus far, I have never felt so much pure joy in my life then when I have been able to bring a sense of joy into someone's life who has such a lacking of that essential emotion in their life at that current time.
Things in Pontypridd have been insane. Elder Farar and I have been getting out of the flat to go work at 8:00 and then coming back at around 6:00 every day for the past few weeks. The weather over here has been insane. On Saturday it rained, hailed, snowed, and was sunny in a span if like 3 hours.
Just about every day we get picked up by a man named Gavin who has been volunteering his time and one of his buisnesses' power washing vans to help clean up and sanitize what the flood left behind. Quick side note, Gavin looks a lot like my Uncle Matt and has exactly the same sense of humor so that's been pretty hilariousđŸ˜‚. Alright back on track...so a lot of misionaries have been coming down to Ponty to help with the clean up. I think the most we had was around thirty on one day, which is over 1/8th of the mission. President Highes even came down last Friday to look at the work that's being done and help out a little himself. That was super cool, they had a camera man from LDS news, or something like that, walking around with him to capture the experience. They interviewed Gavin which was really awesome! He now has been telling everyone that he's a VIP and has been sporting an LDS helping hands bib ever since. I got interviewed as well, nothing too spectacular, they just asked me to tell the quick story of how we got involved with the clean up and some of the experinces that we've had. Overall, these last few weeks have been both amazing and physically and emotionally draining. But I'll also most definitely remember this specific time for the rest of my life and onward.
I hope all of you are doing well!
