My father died yesterday due to complications from Alzheimers. This letter is Ben’s response to that.Karen--------------------------------That was a surprise...death has left me alone for the most part. The two that I remember most are of my english teacher and of my great grandmother. Now, as well, I feel calm. It's going to take some getting used to, I think, but this is one of those changes that help us grow. I think it´ll be nice to remember that at about the same time that he passed away, we were teaching a first discussion to Sara in the home of a family of members of the Church. I shared with her 2 Nephi 3:12 (see below), and as she read, she felt the spirit fill her. Later, when she told us as we walked with her to her house about the feeling, I talked about the times that I had felt the same way. There is a boundless, jubilant energy in The Book of Mormon. It brings the spirit to us as very few things can and feeds us in a way that nothing else can.I remember reading a small portion of Grandpa´s mission journal in my last weeks at home; I´ll have to spend more time with those when I return. He wasn´t always "Grandpa Sevy", he used to be a missionary, perhaps not all that different from how I am now. Every one of us is a lamb of God, in need of help. Even Jesus Christ was known as the lamb of God. Many of us are also working to serve the children of God, making us his shepherds. Most everyone plays both roles. In the sixth verse of How Firm a Foundation (lyrics listed below), we find a wonderful truth. After passing through everything, fire and floods, the dearth of poverty and the pride of success, after the winds, the rain, and the whirlwind of a telestial, lifelong trial have shaved our strength away, when, in the flesh, we become nothing, He acts. He raises us and causes us to stand. That which was shaved away was our imperfection. At the end of this life, Jesus Christ will welcome us home to rest in His goodness, and he will hold us close. We will be restored with everything that was taken from us returned one-hundred-fold. We will live with God, not as innocent spirits, but as purified souls, souls who have walked through the valley of the shadow of death and have faced everything that we were asked to face.I´m so very grateful to have an eternal family. Everything will be worth it if we stay true to our covenants.Elder Sheffer—————————————————2 Nephi 3:12Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord. How Firm a Foundation1. How firm a foundation, ye Saints of the Lord,Is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can he say than to you he hath said,Who unto the Savior, who unto the Savior,Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?2. In ev’ry condition—in sickness, in health,In poverty’s vale or abounding in wealth,At home or abroad, on the land or the sea—As thy days may demand, as thy days may demand,As thy days may demand, so thy succor shall be.3. Fear not, I am with thee; oh, be not dismayed,For I am thy God and will still give thee aid.I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,Upheld by my righteous, upheld by my righteous,Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.4. When through the deep waters I call thee to go,The rivers of sorrow shall not thee o’erflow,For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,And sanctify to thee, and sanctify to thee,And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.5. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply. The flame shall not hurt thee; I only designThy dross to consume, thy dross to consume,Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.6. E’en down to old age, all my people shall proveMy sov’reign, eternal, unchangeable love; And then, when gray hair shall their temples adorn,Like lambs shall they still, like lambs shall they still,Like lambs shall they still in my bosom be borne.7. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for reposeI will not, I cannot, desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,I’ll never, no never, I’ll never, no never,I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!
